Orthodontics: The Answers to Your Questions Regarding Retainer Care

Posted .

Do you have questions about how to care for your teen’s retainer? If so, our orthodontist, Dr. Paul Sokolowski, is happy to help. The sooner they know how to care for their appliance, the better chance they have of maintaining a top-notch retainer and smile. To help you get started, our orthodontist is happy to provide the answers to the following commonly asked questions about retainer care in Newport Beach, California:

Question No. 1: How should I clean my retainer?
Answer: You should clean your retainer daily. First, rinse it with water right when you remove it from the mouth. Then, brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste to remove plaque and debris. For further cleaning, you can use denture cleaning solution.

Question No. 2: How should I care for my retainer?
Answer: You should care for your appliance by keeping it in the case provided and in a safe place when it’s not in the mouth. This can reduce your chances of breaking, damaging or losing it. You should also avoid putting it in hot environments or in areas where your dog can reach it.

Question No. 3: What happens if I lose or damage my retainer?
Answer: Typically, you will come back into our office to get a replacement. Our orthodontist will take measurements to fit you for a new one. This might take some time, so you might need to visit our office twice. You will generally need to pay for a replacement retainer.
