Orthodontic Expander FAQs
A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance that widens the upper arch or upper jaw. It is often used for children with narrow palates, crossbites or crowding.
A fixed expander stays in place and is not removed by the patient. A removable expander can be taken out as directed but requires excellent cooperation to work properly.
A Schwartz appliance is a removable orthodontic appliance that may be used for gradual dental arch expansion in select cases.
MARPE is a category of miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion. MSE, or maxillary skeletal expander, is commonly discussed as a type of skeletal expansion appliance within that category.
