What Is MARPE?

MARPE, or miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion, is an orthodontic expansion approach that may be used for select patients who need skeletal support to widen the upper jaw. Paul Sokolowski, DDS evaluates MARPE treatment in Newport Beach, California, for patients with narrow arches, crossbites or expansion needs that may not be fully addressed with traditional expanders.

MARPE uses temporary anchorage, often small orthodontic miniscrews, to help direct expansion forces toward the upper jaw structure. Our Orthodontics may consider MARPE for certain older children, teens or patients whose palatal growth stage makes traditional expansion less predictable.

MARPE vs. Traditional Palatal Expansion

Traditional palatal expansion is often effective in younger children because their upper jaw is still developing. MARPE may be considered when the patient is older or when the desired expansion requires more skeletal anchorage, and may help reduce unwanted dental tipping in appropriate cases.
